Chiawa Camp Newsletter
June 2004

What a fantastic start to the year 2004. Grant and Lynsey finally got married in April in Scotland and Chiawa Camp is now open for the season which is already in full swing!

Just a few weeks ago at the end of April, the Cumings family and friends packed their bags and left Zambia for the bonnie and unbelievably sunny banks of Loch Lomond for our wedding. We had an amazing turn out, of all our families and friends and had the most perfect dream wedding. A great fun weekend was had by all and we would like to thank everyone who came to our wedding from far and wide across the world to help make our big, special day such a joyous and most memorable occasion. We would also like to thank everyone for their kindness and generosity with all our wedding gifts, and also for all the cards, messages, e-mails and telegrams that we received on the day. A day after the wedding it was straight back to work for us to make it back to Zambia on time to greet our first guests of the 2004 safari season – no time for luxuries such as honeymoons!

It has been a marvellous start to the season with lots of interesting sightings so far. Our packs of wild dogs are in the area and were just yesterday hanging around behind Chiawa Camp.

We have had a few other visitors through the camp in the last week, Mr. Tembo our resident male leopard who left lots of tracks on our sandy path and even took a stroll through our dining room during the night.

We also had a lioness wander past the workshop, our storeroom and right past our staff at dusk a couple of nights ago! Grant and I had a very interesting sighting, whilst on an afternoon game drive, we spotted a brown snake eagle with a snake hanging from its beak. He was being harassed by lots of smaller birds as he treated the snake in his mouth like a piece of spaghetti!

On the 4th of May we were privileged to see a Lunar Eclipse, which was fascinating to watch. It took about one hour for the moon to be completely covered, as this happened the stars became exceptionally bright and glistened and twinkled at us from the vast, clear African night sky. The moon took on an amazing orange hue from the dust reflected in the earth’s shadow. We have also had our first moon lit Island dinner of the season which was a thrilling and unique experience for all our guests that were there that evening, it was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

Finally we would like to welcome two new members of staff to the Chiawa Team – Joe Du Plessis and Barbara Buchanan. Joe has joined us as a guide and is very experienced on the water and bush coming from a super Lodge in Natal, South Africa. With his lovely nature and his sense of humour we are positive he will be a great asset at Chiawa.

His partner Barbara also joins us and will be helping Lynsey to pamper and spoil all our guests at Chiawa Camp. Along with being a hostess she will help manage front of house and housekeeping departments along with many other things! We are absolutely delighted to have them join the Chiawa Team this year and we are looking forward to spending the season with them both.

We also had an intensive First Aid training day at the camp off season and our staff learned to handle all manner of injuries as pictured on the left !

May we take this opportunity to thank everyone for all the support you have given us last year and we wish you all the best for the coming season.

Grant, Lynsey and the Chiawa Team.
