FARAWAY CAMPS, INCOMPARABLE WILDERNESSES
Lingering along the Zambezi River between Zambia and Zimbabwe, this iconic region (which is still relatively undeveloped) is renowned for abundant wildlife in a raw and remote wilderness. From island hopping elephant and buffalo to prides of lion and prolific leopard sightings. Riverine ebony and fig tress grow thickly along the water’s edge, bordering inland floodplains with towering winterthorn and acacia. Rolling hills sit quietly as the backdrop of this just over 4,000 square kilometre park.
Best Time to Visit – from May to November (our camps are closed mid-November through April) with prime game viewing from June.
A vast and pristine wilderness awaits those who visit this 9,000 square kilometre game-rich park. Open, grassy plains, lush valleys and mature woodlands are dramatically interrupted by the dynamic Luangwa River and her waterways, which draw an intense concentration of wildlife in search of hydration during the dry season. Endemic Thornicroft’s giraffe, Crawshay’s zebra, Cookson’s wildebeest, immense herds of elephant and puku, and their predators thrive in this captivating landscape. The most intact major river system in Africa and the life-blood of the park, the Luangwa River is not to be missed.
Best Time to Visit – from July to October as the river attracts an exceptional number of wildlife.

AT ALL OF CHIAWA SAFARIs’ CAMPS – CONSERVATION IS A WAY OF LIFE.
Chiawa’s dedication to sustainable and responsible tourism is more than just marketing. We invest in an array of sustainable protocols and strategies – from social and economic schemes to actions that preserve and protect the environment and her wildlife.
CONSIDERATE DESIGN OF CAMPS
by the use of renewable materials in construction and locally purchased natural materials – as well as building camps that blend in with the environment rather than making a statement to stand out against it.
NO CHARCOAL USE WHATSOEVER
instead utilizing bio-friendly eco-briquettes that are produced and purchased in nearby Lusaka – and using firewood for guest fire pits only from dead or elephant-uprooted trees.
80%
REDUCTION IN FOSSIL FUEL USAGE
by investing in 240 volt silent inverter standby power and low energy LED light bulbs reducing dependence by 30% – replacing outboard boat motors from 2 to 4 stroke, reducing emissions and fuel consumption by 50%.
80%
REDUCTION IN PLASTIC CONSUMPTION
by providing all guests with high-quality temperature-maintaining stainless steel reusable water bottles, reducing our waste of plastic bottles by more than 3000 per year throughout all camps.
CATCH + RELEASE ONLY
as the first operator to practice catch and release sport angling followed by a successful lobbying of the government to impose a ban on the killing of any fish species in the Lower Zambezi National Park.
MINDFUL GUIDING
where wildlife is observed and not influenced or interfered with by our expert guides, red light only night drives, off-road driving is kept to a minimum, and non-motorised activities such as walks and canoeing are offered and encouraged.
