KIDS ON SAFARI

Luxury family safari in Zambia

Bringing your kids on safari can make for some incredible family memories, cherished for years to come. A family holiday unlike any other, a safari in Zambia exposes your kids to a world they’ve yet to see. Away from screens, kids on safari will marvel at the vast wilderness and the stillness of nature. Thrilling wildlife sightings will make them hold their breath, and our top guides will teach them something no book or movie could ever hope to replicate. As parents, you’ll take deep joy in seeing your kids experience all that a family safari in Africa can offer.

At Chiawa Safaris, families and children are welcome at all of our camps, with accommodation options, kid-friendly safari activities and age-limits varying between each of our Zambian lodges. Different families will find different camps more appealing.

Arguably our best family-friendly safari lodge is Chiawa Camp. This Lower Zambezi lodge allows for the best luxury family safari option with the most kid-friendly experiences available.

Family Safari Tent Options

The Safari Suite
A 220 square meter multi-room tent for the ideal luxury family safari in the Lower Zambezi National Park.

Privately tucked away from the other tents, it features an expansive deck, eating area, fire pit, outdoor lounge, private pool and an outdoor shower. A full bathroom with walk-in shower and claw-foot tub separate the king bedroom and the large living room and guest toilet.

During the day, daybeds covered in colorful cushions provide ample space and comfort for relaxation. At night, during the turn down service, room attendants will ready the day beds (large singles) for the kids to sleep, with four-poster style mosquito nets and pure cotton linens. And again in the morning the beds will once again revert to their daytime regalia.

Safari Tents
Our newly rebuilt luxury safari tents are big enough for small families on safari with one or two children. Each tent is about 100 square meters, with a super-king sized bed under a massive mosquito net within which spins a cooling electric fan, a lounge area with another fan and the option for a third bed or bunkbed for younger families.

The bathroom features a claw-foot bath, separate shower, double wash basins and indoor loo along with a large changing and luggage area. Leading onto a covered outdoor verandah with dining table, outdoor waterfall shower and plunge pool – these tents are perfect for a family-friendly safari.

Amazing Family Trip
"Chiawa Camp exceeded all of our expectations. We were a family of five, including three children, and this was our first safari. The staff here takes wonderful care of the guests. . . We took two fishing trips and two day drives and two evening drives. We saw lions, elephants, hippos, impala, baboons and crocs everywhere and the monkeys that played in the trees and on the roofs of our tents were a favorite. We wish could have stayed longer.”
Shelley, Texas

Loved Our Stay at Chiawa
“The rooms were spacious and very comfortable. We could view elephant, hippos, baboons and various other animals out our back window. The staff couldn't have been more accommodating and the camp was very well managed. We saw leopard and lion every day of our four day stay. The food was also very plentiful and delicious. We dined in a couple of surprise locations which was very fun for our family. My husband and sons enjoyed catch and release fishing on the Zambezi. My youngest son was very excited to catch a 30 pound catfish.”
Michael, California

An Absolute Highlight
“We have just returned from a wonderful family holiday. We were a total of 17 people ranging from 7 to 78! The flight into Chiawa was stunning and from the moment the small plane landed we were treated with such care that we knew we were in for a memorable stay. The staff made every effort to meet all our individual needs and we never felt awkward asking! The children all had a wonderful time and the activities were varied and plentiful. We canoed down the Zambezi, went cat fishing, cruised on a boat and went on numerous game drives."
Lucinda, UK

Best and First Safari Ever
“All was fantastic. . . guides, room, service and food. Every little attention were amazing . . . the lunch on the river, game drives. We felt really special, and we would love to go back. PS : my children were 13 and 17 great age for this trip”

Kid-Friendly Safari Activities at Chiawa Camp

What Age Can You Take Kids on Safari?

Chiawa Camp
Welcomes kids 8 years of age and older. Kids 16 and younger must be accompanied overnight by an adult (i.e – we unfortunately cannot book a separate tent for your kids if they are under 17 years of age). The Safari Suite allows kids on safari as young as 5 years old, however those younger than 8 cannot join in the communal areas for the enjoyment of our other guests, unless the entire camp is booked out on an exclusive basis.

Old Mondoro + Puku Ridge
Welcomes children 12 years and older. Children 18 and younger must be accompanied overnight by an adult.

Family Safaris in the Lower Zambezi

At our other Lower Zambezi safari lodge, Old Mondoro, older children are certainly welcome.

The family safari accommodation options include a two-bedroom chalet that is perfect for families of four. The five other chalets can only accommodate 2 people with either a king bed or two singles, making it quite possible for a family of four to book 2 chalets and have an adult staying with a child in each chalet overnight.

Families on safari can enjoy day and night game drives as well as boating and fishing on our river safaris. Kids aged 14 and above can go out on walking safaris and canoe trips.

Family Safaris in the South Luangwa

At our luxury lodge Puku Ridge in the South Luangwa National Park, children 12 years of age and older are most welcome.

In similarity to the family-friendly accommodation options at Old Mondoro, the unique tents at Puku Ridge cannot accommodate more than 2 people per tent.  Bed arrangements of a king or two singles can be arranged for an adult wishing to share with their child.

Family-friendly safari activities here include day and night game drives, visits to the hide for excellent and up-close wildlife viewing, and walking safaris are available for kids on safari aged 14 and older.
